WHAT
Total Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure in which injured or damaged parts of the knee joint are replaced with artificial parts. Your new knee will consist of a metal shell at the end of the femur, a plastic dish on the tibia, and if needed, a plastic button in the knee cap.
WHO
Total knee replacement is performed on people suffering from severe arthritic conditions. Most patients who have aritificial knees are over 55 years old, but the procedure can be performed on younger people under the following circumstances:
- Pain is severe and frequent enough to restrict not only work and recreation, but also the ordinary activities of daily living;
- There is significant stiffness of your knee;
- There is significant instability (constant giving way) of your knee;
- There is significant deformity (usually low leggedness);
- Non-surgical treatment has not worked.
WHY
After knee replacement surgery, you can improve your knee motion and return to normal activities of daily living. Work and low impact exercises are also reliably restored.
About 95% of knee implants can last at least 10 years.
